AFTER SCHOOL IS VITAL.(PERSPECTIVE)

A foolish turf war threatens to jeopardize millions of dollars in private grant money that could be used to provide vital after-school programs in public schools throughout New York state. The public should not tolerate sacrificing such scarce resources for partisan motives.

The grant money is available through the After-School Corp., founded by the financier George Soros. Last year, he pledged $25 million a year over five years to after-school programs, provided each dollar attracted three matching dollars from public and private sources.
